My new album's bassist!
Who is Richard Mikel?
Richard Mikel is a bassist and educator living in Austin, Texas. He holds a bachelors degree in Music Performance with an emphasis in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. In 2011 he traveled to San Fransisco to participate in the International Society of Bassists’ Scott LaFaro Jazz Competition and received an honorable mention for his submission to the ASCAP Foundation’s Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award. Since then Richard has become a highly sought after sideman, performing regularly in Austin and throughout the vast state of Texas.
I officially met Richard a year ago during Thanksgiving, when I came to spend the break in Austin. He has been playing with me ever since I moved to this city in July. My first impression of him is that he is hilarious. He looks kind of serious, but don’t be fooled! His jokes are sharp and he is just too funny. I will be ever thankful for the interest and enjoyment he showed when I first introduced him to my music. He made me feel confident and motivated me to work harder on this album. I am not only in love with his playing, but also love how dedicated and enthusiastic he has been with this project and the music. He has a beautiful sound, is very attentive to details and makes everyone he plays with sound great. I admire all the heart and hard work he puts into everything. Along with Andrew Friedrich, Richard has been my right hand in producing the final touch of the music. I feel so grateful to have him and his bass in this record!
