Laura developed a love for writing vocal arrangements in her journey through Musical Theater. Besides writing and arranging the music of her own projects, she also writes songs and vocal arrangements by commission for various Colombian pop artists, musical theater plays, and vocal jazz groups.

Laura Otero & Payawarú (Vocal Ensemble)
Laura created this project in 2009, wanting to hear live her experimental vocal arrangements, which she was writing to get closer to the popular and traditional music of her country, Colombia. In 4 to 10 part arrangements, she seeks to bring a personal touch to the way voices are used in this kind of music by integrating jazz harmony, and counterpoint techniques. She strives to preserve the essence of each musical genre, and explores sounds and textures that are not common in Colombian music, using improvisation as a tool of musical expression in addition to being a means to create her music. Among this project’s repertoire can be found Colombian popular and traditional music from various regions, Bossa Nova, Jazz Standards, Latin American music, and original compositions. She hopes that the passion and love she feels for Colombian music can be heard in her creations.
This project has won many awards and contests in Colombia like “Jóvenes Intérpretes” of the Republic Bank. It also won a Latino Battle of the Bands in Dallas in 2012 and in 2013 won an Outstanding Performance Downbeat Award in the graduate category for Vocal Group. |
